As horse owners, one of our biggest responsibilities is keeping our horses happy and healthy.
But caring for them can be really challenging.
At Shangri-La Farm, we prioritize the well-being of your four-legged friend.
We give them the proper care and attention to guarantee they stay happy, healthy and in good shape.
On that note, we compiled seven of our horse care tips and tricks for taking care of your horses here on our farm.
Tip #1: Provide Plenty of Clean Water
Both digestion and maintaining a horse's body temperature depend on water.

That's why always be sure you have enough fresh, clean water available for them.
For horses who are outside for more than 2 hours a day water troughs should be available with clean water. Additionally, it's vital to keep their water basins clear of debris and algae that could taint the water.
Tip #2: Feed a Balanced Diet

Horse health must be sustained with a balanced diet.
This could contain grains, hay, grass, and vitamins.
And to avoid obesity or other weight-related health problems, it's also important to monitor their weight and modify how they eat as needed.
At Shangri-La Farm, all turnouts and pastures offer Bahia grass on dirt, not sand which means you’ll never have sand colic. The grass is coveted and many young horses are brought to this area just for the grass to help with development.
Proper allotment of grass pastures means healthy coats and happy horses!
Tip #3: Regular Exercise
The physical and mental well-being of a horse also depends on regular exercise.
It can help prevent health concerns, such as obesity, physical atrophy, and joint problems, whether they are competitive racing or not.
Plus, this can also help in mental stimulation and prevent boredom.
Tip #4: Regular Grooming

If you want a happy horse to have a good coat, a healthy hoof, and be free from skin diseases like rain rot or scratches, regular grooming is a must!
This also lets you check for any signs of injury or illness.
On top of that, grooming can be a relaxing activity for both of you which can help strengthen your bond.
Tip #5: Regular Veterinary Checkups
It's very important to have regular veterinary checkups to catch any medical conditions beforehand and prevent them from worsening.
As advised by our vet, arrange scheduled vaccines, tooth cleanings, and other preventative treatments.
It's also paramount to monitor them for any illness or injury symptoms and seek a vet as soon as needed.
Tip #6: Provide Adequate Shelter

Whether from the sweltering sun or the chilly rain, horses need protection from these weather conditions.
Horses that live outside should have plenty of shade trees or outdoor shelters to protect from the sun.
Ensure to check gates, boards and stalls for protruding nails or anything that could injure the horse. And keep track of it and any required maintenance to prevent injury or escape.
Tip #7: Provide Mental Stimulation
Like people, horses can get restless if their brains aren't challenged. Especially horses who are stalled or stallions and horses who are turned out alone. It's important for them to have toys or other activities.
You can let simple activities graze in different areas or training exercises or obstacle courses for more complex ones.
